In VermontIn Spring of 1995, we realized a dream which began 30 years earlier by moving from suburban New Jersey to rural Vermont. We purchased part of an old, defunct dairy farm, determined to keep the land in agricultural usage. Dedicated to preserving diversity in livestock and promoting and preserving rare breeds of farm animals, we got our first sheep, planted our first apple trees, and put in our first vegetable and perennial gardens, with heritage and rare varieties where possible. Today, that means we raise Jacob sheep (wth a couple of coopworths for diversity), and a layer flock of hens, all of whom are on the ALBC endangered or rare lists. In addition, each year we raise a crop of Kosher King meat birds, heritage turkeys, and tamworth pigs for our table. John does the vegetables and fruit; Betty raises the animals. Our goal is to be healthy and self-sufficient, selling extra stock in order to pay for some of the grain and hay we use. Purchases of stock help this labor of love continue. Concerned about the food we eat, we raise our own pastured lamb, chicken, and turkey, and purchase our pastured beef from friends in Shelburne, Mass. This Spring '07, we will also raise a couple of pastured pigs. We also raise most of our own vegetables. The fruit situation is still coming along!
but would appreciate if you contact us first, either by phone or e-mail. Learn about activities at the farm by following Betty's blog at http://sheepwoman.wordpress.com.
